Marla Berg, soprano, is a versatile performer, appearing in recital, concert, opera and musical theater. She has sung with opera companies across the United States including Glimmerglass Opera, Central City Opera, Anchorage Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Cleveland Opera and Kansas City Opera. Her roles include: Violetta in La Traviata, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Constanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, the Mother in Hansel and Gretel and Hanna in The Merry Widow. In concert she has appeared with The Cleveland Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra in her Carnegie Hall debut, the Denver Chamber Symphony, the Rockford Symphony and the Ohio Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Berg’s musical theater appearances have included Maria in West Side Story, Julie in Carousel, and Fiona in Brigadoon, and Mother Superior in The Sound of Music and Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver! with Porthouse Theatre. Ms. Berg has performed internationally in India, Italy and Austria. Her recent performances in India were a part of the outreach program with Kolkata Classics. She performed for over 7000 students during her time in India. Ms. Berg’s varied appearances include performances with Claire Porter, a Guggenheim Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The performances with Ms. Porter of “Falling for Prepositions” have included numerous colleges as well as Joe’s Pub in New York and The American Language Association Convention in New York in January of 2018.

Ms. Berg is the Director of the Kent State Opera Program. The operas that she has directed at Kent State University include: Mozart’s The Impressario, Barber’s A Hand of Bridge, Offenbach’s A Musical Evening at the Choufleuris’, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, Bizet’s Dr. Miracle, Blitzstein’s The Harpies, Offenbach’s Die Fledermaus, and Gisela in Her Bathtub by a Canadian composer, Neil Weisensel, which featured the world premiere of the orchestration. Ms. Berg’s other directing credits include Donizetti’s Elixir of Love, Mark Adamo’s Little Women and Menotti’s The Consul with Nightingale Opera Theatre. She most recently directing a world premiere production of Mary Chesnut, a one woman opera at Cleveland Public Theatre. Ms. Berg will assistant direct this summer for three opera productions at Janiec Opera Center at The Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. Ms. Berg received her B.M. degree from St. Olaf College, a M.M. and and an Artist Diploma from Cleveland Institute of Music. She is currently Associate Professor of Voice and Director of the Opera Program at Kent State University.
